For those of you who saw, or were involved in Seussical, you all know how rewarding our work was last summer. Because the children of the Newtown/Sandy Hook area are so great, artistically/emotionally/creatively, Seussical was an incredible success. We have organized an amazing Summer of Shows: 2014 - but it is no secret that these productions cost a great deal of money. One of our very important goals continues to be offering participation in our programs to the children of Newtown children free of charge.

On behalf of Dr. Baroody, the 12.14 Foundation’s board and these incredibly talented youth who want to express their creativity through the performing arts, I am asking you to help us find funding. Not necessarily from your pockets but if you have ANY connection, large or small, to ANY generous, sensitive, arts-minded, sympathetic corporations or moneyed people – PLEASE tell them about us and put us in touch with them. You can donate directly from this website. But do it fast. No arts organization operates solely on ticket sales yet careful producing, generous individuals and a phenomenally supportive community last year allowed us to do just that. However, we cannot sustain the type of work we want to do without additional financial support.

Please, help us find that financial support to keep the magic of the 12.14 Foundation doing what it does best – offering confidence-building, self-expression, creativity, community and collaboration to your children through the performing arts. Not surprisingly, in addition to our summer plans, we are seeking larger-level donors who are interested in helping finance the Performing Arts Center we hope to build as a living remembrance to those who were lost on 12/14/12.  We can use help, large and small, from any pocketbook, wallet, sock drawer or corporate coffer.

Please feel free to contact me directly, or contact Dr. Michael Baroody regarding special donation opportunities. Thank you for your amazing support.

Scotty McCreery was back in Newtown yesterday to meet with 12.14 leaders, participate in 2014 planning activities for the Foundation and speak with local media groups. This was Scotty's second visit to Newtown in two months (he previously visited in December), ane he spoke extensively about his motivation for joining the Foundation and his goals as goodwill ambassador.

"Newtown is a great town with great people," said Scotty. "Although a terrible tragedy happened here, it does not define the people who live in this area."

“When we were approached about becoming a goodwill ambassador for 12.14 Foundation, I saw the passion they had, and it fit in with what we believe,” Scotty continued. “Having a number one record is nice, but the main thing for me is impacting people’s lives in a positive way through music and the performing arts, and that’s what the 12.14 Foundation is doing. Being an ambassador for the Foundation is something I want to carry around everywhere I go.”

About helping to build awareness for Newtown and 12.14 Foundation, Scotty explained, "Everybody was touched by this. Everybody heard the news. People couldn't believe what they were hearing and wanted to help in any way they could. So when they hear what we're doing, and that we're serious about this, they'll want to help, too, and be a part of it."

As a goodwill ambassador, Scotty will make personal appearances on behalf of the Foundation and help build visibility for the Foundation's work to his fan base via social media and other public communications. Click the image below to watch an interview with Scotty and Fox CT's Jeevan Vittal.

The video below is from CBS This Morning, one of several national networks covering 12.14 Foundation's inaugural production of Seussical The Musical.  The production ran to four sold-out performances in August 2013 at the Newtown, CT High School.  It was a collaboration between more than 80 Newtown-area children and some of Broadway's renowned leaders, including:

Michael Unger, Director – a huge portfolio of Broadway directing credits
Van Dean, Producer – Tony Award®
winning producer of Porgy and Bess
Jeffrey Saver, Music Director – composer for a large portfolio of Broadway musicals
Jennifer Paulson Lee, Choreographer – numerous Broadway choreography credits

The production also starred John Tartaglia, Sesame Street puppeteer and acclaimed Broadway performer, in the role of the Cat in the Hat.

Our Seussical production was all about helping children recover from the tragic events of 12.14.2012 through inspiration and leadership. We are very grateful to the dedicated Broadway professionals who gave their time and talents so generously. Stay tuned for information about new 12.14 programming planned for summer 2014!

The 12.14 Foundation was formed to heal through the arts, to create a nurturing educational environment, to provide life-long tools for success, and to communicate love, restoration and confidence. We aim to accomplish these goals within the context of a great architectural achievement.  Our first year, as anticipated, mainly addressed the fundamentals – corporate and legal, technology infrastructure, and board/advisory team development.  Additionally, we produced our highly successful inaugural event, Seussical the Musical, which affirmed our vision and garnered national media attention.

With the fundamentals in place, we will focus our energies in 2014 on building awareness, fundraising, and formalizing our long-term plans for the Newtown Performing Arts Center.  We will also continue to produce professional-quality events along the way, enriching the lives of children in Newtown and beyond.

To those ends, I am delighted to announce that Scotty McCreery, platinum-selling country music performer and American Idol 10 winner, has been selected to be the Foundation’s first Goodwill Ambassador.  Scotty visited Newtown this past December and has embraced his role as a 12.14 ambassador.  More than an entertainer, Scotty is a young man of remarkable character who will represent us admirably.  More information about Scotty’s involvement with the Foundation is available here.

Now, more than ever, we need your support.  Regardless of size, every donation helps greatly.  To donate to the 12.14 Fund, click this link.  To donate to our Scotty McCreery Fund, click this link.  You can also make a $10 mobile donation by texting CTKIDS to 80077*.  All donations are tax-deductible and will be used to help 12.14 Foundation continue to achieve our objectives.

Thank you and best wishes in 2014,

Sponsored by the 12.14 Foundation and supported by a network of dedicated families, Seussical cast members performed popular songs from their recent Newtown production. Seussical director Michael Unger and choreographer Jennifer Paulson Lee then led a workshop to teach audience volunteers song and dance sequences from the musical.

On a day when rain threatened to dampen Newtown Labor Day parade festivities, the cast of Seussical the Musical sang and danced their way down Main Street on the 12.14 Foundation float. The 12.14 Seussicals, ranging in age from five to eighteen, are all from Newtown and the surrounding area. Wearing signature costumes and head dressings, the 12.14 Seussicals performed several numbers from the musical production, as well as a collection of other contemporary songs.

The 12.14 float was built from scratch by Dr. Michael Baroody and a group of local parents and volunteers. Dr. Baroody is the 12.14 Foundation's founder. He was on hand to march in the procession, as was Michael Unger, director of the recent Seussical production. They were accompanied by a number of local parents and volunteers.  David Smiley, a Newtown resident, towed the 12.14 Foundation float.

In the end, 12.14 was awarded runner up for best float and winner of the most colorful entry!

Below are a few photos of the Newtown Labor Day parade.  We'll be adding others, as well as links to video footage, as they become available.

Hi, my name is Sarah Baroody.  I live in Newtown, CT. I'm a runner.Hartford Marathon 2013 - Sarah Baroody, MD

Like many, I was deeply affected by the tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.  I knew some of the children who died, some of the parents, some of the kids who survived.  I have a 1st grader.  I know some kids who are traumatized, and parents who are fearful.  I’ve witnessed so much pain.  I am overwhelmed by sadness at times. This is frequently what I think about when I’m running.  When I’m tired, struggling or in physical pain I think…this is nothing.  I started running for exercise a couple years ago, and was mildly considering running a marathon.  I was not sure if I wanted to make that commitment.  After 12/14 I instantly knew that I had to.  I am fiercely compelled to run and I can't adequately explain why.  Therapeutic I suppose.  26 for 26.

I've decided to run in the ING Hartford Marathon 2013 on October 12 to raise money for the 12.14 Foundation.  I'm putting together a team of local runners to join me in the Hartford Marathon event.  If you'd like to join the team and run the full marathon or a half marathon, click the "join" button below and send me an email with your contact info.  If you'd like to sponsor a runner (or the entire 12.14 team), click the "sponsor" button below.  Also, please feel free to add a comment at the end of this blog post, and link to this post on your Facebook page by clicking the "share" button below to maximize the awareness of this event.

The marathon is one small personal goal.  In the long term I would like to see a significant healing opportunity for Newtown.  This is why I am running for the 12.14 Foundation.  The depth of this tragedy deserves a significant response, and one in which dynamic activity and healing takes place.  I am incredibly proud of my husband for his work towards creating a performing arts center in Newtown, and I support this endeavor any way that I can.  I have seen first-hand the healing power of the performing arts through the 12.14 Foundation this summer with Seussical the Musical.  The experience was incredible and much more significant than I ever expected.  This is something we can and should carry on for a very long time!

I hope you'll join our efforts at the Hartford Marathon, either as a participant or sponsor – or both!
