Seussical Coverage – CBS This Morning

The video below is from CBS This Morning, one of several national networks covering 12.14 Foundation's inaugural production of Seussical The Musical. The production ran to four sold-out performances in August 2013 at the Newtown, CT High School. It was a collaboration between more than 80 Newtown-area children and some of Broadway's renowned leaders, including:

Michael Unger, Director – a huge portfolio of Broadway directing credits
Van Dean, Producer – Tony Award® winning producer of Porgy and Bess
Jeffrey Saver, Music Director – composer for a large portfolio of Broadway musicals
Jennifer Paulson Lee, Choreographer – numerous Broadway choreography credits

The production also starred John Tartaglia, Sesame Street puppeteer and acclaimed Broadway performer, in the role of the Cat in the Hat.

Our Seussical production was all about helping children recover from the tragic events of 12.14.2012 through inspiration and leadership. We are very grateful to the dedicated Broadway professionals who gave their time and talents so generously. Stay tuned for information about new 12.14 programming planned for summer 2014!

So, why a Musical in Newtown? We, as a community, have a responsibility to the children affected by the events of 12.14. We will give them tools for creative expression, innovation, and confidence that will spill over into every other aspect of their lives. The performing arts lies in the core of every human being and is the essence of who we are…….. It is a first grader; to sing, dance, pretend, and to laugh out loud at the simplest things in life. This is the first of many collaborations between the world’s best and the incredible local community of Newtown aimed at having our children and those around the globe reach their potential.

A fundamental pillar of the 1214 Foundation vision is providing the highest level of performing arts education to the children of Newtown and the surrounding areas. Sandy Hook Video Tributes

Like many of you, Kathy and I followed the tragedy of last December with broken hearts. How could such a thing happen anywhere, let alone here in the peaceful hills of western Connecticut? And yet it did happen. As the father of three beautiful daughters, I found myself searching for answers. I found few that were meaningful or fulfilling.

Amid all that grief and sorrow, however, we witnessed a world of empathy. It took many forms, one of which was a collection of musical and video tributes. People from around the world wanted us to know we weren’t alone in our sorrow, so they opened their hearts to us through artistic expression.

In keeping with our vision of using the performing arts to memorialize and honor those we lost, I’ve shared a few of my favorite Sandy Hook tributes below. I hope they touch you, too.
